One common mistake that people generally make is to term both “betting” and “gambling” as one and the same. However, this cannot be farther from the truth as there are clear differences between betting and gambling. While everyone in this world gambles in one way or another, not everyone engages in betting. So, what exactly is the difference between the two, you may ask? Well, this article will provide you with the answer, so that you will know in what context to correctly use each of the terms.
Gambling is something that virtually everyone in this world partakes in. It involves betting that a certain result or an outcome will occur as predicted. For example, we take a gamble when we wait for a bus to arrive at a bus-stop at a certain time of the day.
This gamble is based on previous experiences as well as the understanding that the bus consistently and reliably arrives at the bus-stop at the anticipated time. There is a misconception that gambling only involves the placing of real-money bets on a casino gambling game. This is not always the case as seen in the example highlighted above. This is what makes virtually everyone a gambler whether they know it or not. It is also true that people gamble when they place bets on events or on outcomes in a casino game.
You can gamble on casino games such as Blackjack, Baccarat or Poker, Roulette, and slot games. People may also gamble on both offline and online casino games. Realising that people are naturally predisposed to one form of gamble or the other, governments regulate the act by imposing strict laws and policies which aim to protect their citizens from becoming victims of unscrupulous casinos looking to rip them off of their hard-earned money.
What is Betting All About?
While gambling does not necessarily involve the placing of a bet, betting is quite the opposite. Betting is a gamble where you actually place a wager in a casino game for a definite outcome and reward. If you gamble with someone that a bus will arrive at a certain time and place, then you both place a wager to seal the deal, it is a form of betting. You are expecting a predicted outcome to occur and for you to be rewarded for winning. Betting can be done in an official and unofficial manner. You can unofficially bet with family, friends and colleagues and also officially bet in a casino. However, regardless of whether your bet is official or unofficial, there is always money to be either gained or lost.
Difference Between Gambling and Betting
There are obvious differences between gambling and betting. Some of these differences have already been highlighted in the article. The major difference between the two terms is in the attachment or not of monetary value.
You cannot bet without attaching some monetary value to the bet you make. However, you can gamble without making a bet involving real-money. Betting of any kind always involves a monetary risk which the bettor has to take in order to implement the bet.
The bet can be a small one or it could be a huge bet involving lots of money to be either gained or lost. As mentioned before, you can gamble without betting, but you cannot bet without gambling. It may sound strange, but this is the truth of the matter. Every bet you make is a gamble in itself, but not every gamble you engage in involves the placing of a wager or bet.
People voluntarily and involuntarily gamble, but betting is almost always a voluntary and conscious action. Betting involves a person knowing the object of the bet, the amount required to execute the bet, the possible outcomes and the expected reward. With gambling, you really do not need to think that far off. You do not always need to worry about monetary risk and reward. However, you do need to worry about the outcome of your gamble on your time and overall conveniences like in the case of taking a gamble on a bus arriving at a particular time and place.
